Versilia is not only beaches and the sea.
A part from the most famous seaside and beaches of Italy, there is another Versilia, made of art and culture, already on the scene at the beginning of the 1900s with an artistic avant-garde that, in the splendid atmosphere of the coast, attracted Giacomo Puccini, Pinio Nomellini, Luigi dei Servi and Galileo Chini. Artists who "created" the typical Versilia image of bathing establishments, Carnival, of the pontoons, the seafront with the fashionable Art Nouveau architecture called Liberty that is still the distinctive feature of this Mediterranean promenade celebrated in the Art Nouveau Week from July 8 to 14 in an original and unprecedented event with many different events around the world: guided tours, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, performances and shows to allow everyone to live an original experience in the most beautiful historic buildings of this "fashionable" period.
In all over Italy and other countries there are more than 150 historic buildings that can be visited, 120 specific itineraries, but also guided tours, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, performances and shows concentrated in the Art Nouveau Week: the first edition of an international event created to celebrate the artistic movement that completely changed traditional academy art in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
In Versilia, next week, the most interesting tour is a walk through the architecture of a magnificent period of local and Italian culture.
In this international event the association of Bourbon villas in Versilia and the Puccini foundation offer visits to exclusive, unexpected and spectacular sites to discover the area and its characteristic architectural style.
The 8th, 9th and 13th of July from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, there are three guided tours called "Liberty Mon Amour", a walk along the sea-promenade you have never experienced before. On the 8th of July, start from Piazza dei Campioni with stops at the Walkiria Perfumery, at the historic Caffè Margherita, at Villino Nistri, at the Palace Hotel. The 9th of July appointment at Villa Argentina, a walk to the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte to end with a sunset on the sea avenues. On the 12th of July, start from Villa Argentina again for a walk along Via Leonardo da Vinci to reach Villino Nistri and finally the Grand Hotel Royal.
On the 10th of July at 6:00 pm meeting at the Chini house (today the hotel Residenza dei Pini in Via Roma Capitale, 265 in Lido di Camaiore) where Claudia Menichini, contact person of the historical Galileo Chini Archive, welcomes visitors in the old living room, to guide them through the great artist's villa, offering an aperitif in the garden in the end of the visit.
The events on July 11 and 13 are dedicated to the greatest of Viareggio's citizens, Giacomo Puccini. The guided tours anticipate the Puccini Festival, which, in the months of July and August, welcomes the public in the large open-air theater on Lake Massaciuccoli every year.
On July 11th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm guided tours of the Giacomo Puccini Museum in Torre del Lago, including the first floor of the Villa, recently opened to the public. In this villa on the lake he wrote some of his most unforgettable arias. He looked for "a quiet village with luxurious and extraordinary sunsets" to buy his new home and find inspiration on the banks of his "beloved puddle" as he affectionately called lake Massaciuccoli. The interiors of the villa reveal frequent visits of friends and the composer's peculiar personality, a great gentlemen who loved rare and fashionable objects.
On July 13th at 6:30 pm save the date on the other side of the lake, in the locality of Piaggetta (Massarosa) at Villa Ginori Lisci, for a cultural meeting about Art Nouveau style, the most representative of Versilia.
On the same day, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm extraordinary opening of Villa Puccini in Viareggio (Viale Michelangelo Buonarroti / Corner Piazza Puccini - Viareggio) for guided tours by the staff of the G. Puccini Foundation. (Reservation required).
